Frequently Asked Questions

HFFIA answers

On this page you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about halal, Islamic dietary rules, and halal certification. We clearly explain what halal and haram mean, which products are permitted or not permitted, and why halal certification is important.

Halal means following what Allah subhanehu wa ta’ala has permitted as clean in the Qur’an. The opposite of halal is haram.

Haram is everything which is not permitted or unlawful.

If one does not know the halal or haram status of a particular food or drink, such a food or drink is doubtful.

According to Islamic rules, all by-products of pork are forbidden. The meat of predatory animals such as tigers, foxes, dogs, and leopards is also haram, because they kill their prey with their claws. In addition, it is forbidden to eat birds that feed on meat and tear their food with their talons, such as vultures.

The meat of lawful animals like sheep, chicken, cows will be lawful only if the animals are slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law. In particular the invoking of the name of Allah (swt) (saying Bismillahi Allahu Akbar) at the time of slaughtering is very important. It indicates that life is sacred and even animal life cannot be taken except in the name of Allah for lawful purposes, and no purpose can be considered lawful unless it is sanctioned by Allah (swt).

In Islamic law, najis refers to uncleanliness which cannot be purified.

A halal certification is a confirmation or declaration that no pork derivatives, animal derivatives, or alcohol are used in a product. However, a declaration alone is not sufficient to determine the halal status of a product without doubt; the entire production process must be inspected.

The advanced development in food processing technology makes it more difficult for Muslims to recognize which products are suitable according to the Islamic dietary rules. The makhruh or even Haram substances are hidden in halal-like products such as raw materials, processing aids, etc. Therefore, by having a halal certificate, a manufacturer can guarantee that its products are acceptable for consumption by Muslims.
