Knowledge base on halal food
The most important points in a row
Animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and chickens are halal, provided they are slaughtered according to Islamic rites:
- Pronouncing Bismillah (in the name of Allah (S.W.T.)).
- Use of a sharp knife to ensure a quick and humane slaughter.
- Severing the trachea, esophagus, and carotid arteries.
- The animal must be healthy at the time of slaughter.
Doubtful cases
Many modern food products contain ingredients whose halal status is not always clear:
- Gelatin – Often derived from pork
- Emulsifiers – May be of animal origin
- Enzymes – Source and production process are essential
- Flavourings – May contain alcohol
Prohibited (haram)
- Pork – Completely prohibited in all forms
- Alcoholic beverages
- Blood – From any animal
- Meat of predatory animals – Animals with fangs
- Carrion – Animals that have died naturally
Yes, all sea fish are generally considered halal. For freshwater fish, there are different opinions among Islamic schools of jurisprudence (Madhabs).
Not all E-numbers are problematic, but some may be of animal origin. Certification helps to verify this.
Yes, provided that adequate cleaning takes place between production runs to prevent cross-contamination. This is assessed during our halal certification proces.
Complex ingredients
Today, it is not easy for Muslim consumers to find truly halal certified food. Many products contain ingredients, additives, and/or processing aids that are not halal.
Misleading marketing
Unfortunately, products are often marketed as “halal” even though they do not comply with Islamic requirements. Consumers are frequently unaware of this.
Practical examples:

2005: Aldi-supermarket issued an apology after selling ‘halal certified’ blood sausage containing pork blood.
2014: Cadbury chocolate in Malaysia was found to contain pig DNA.
